June 4, 2025 – With news of orcas coming down San Juan Channel we phoned some past passengers on standby on our calendar who happened to be in town again. Off we went and met the Biggs orcas, T75B’s, T86A’s (minus T86A1’s and T86A3’s), T124A2’s and T124D’s, at Pt Caution. The T137’s who had been with them earlier in the day broke off near Jones Island before or after a hunt. Earlier these orca families had been busy socializing and vocal all day, but now they were in steady travel mode southbound quickly. As they reached Friday Harbor the T75B’s ducked inside for a quick visit before carrying on. The others came back to meet the T75B’s and together they took the narrow channel behind Turn Island State Park. Many onlookers excitedly ran along shore watching the orcas as they went around the island. It was a fairly high tide and many of the harbor seals which are normally on the rocks weren’t there. The orcas gave a very close pass to the rocks and several orcas began tail slapping all together. Not sure if they grabbed a seal(s) or not. Then the group resumed travel around the rocks southbound towards Cattle Pass. We returned with the setting sun.
