Humpback Whale BCX2075 “Olympus” and her 2025 Calf

June 7, 2025 – What a beautiful afternoon to head out under sail ‘wing on wing’ running with the wind from Friday Harbor to Turn Rock. Jibed to keep to the coastline passed the harbor seal haul outs and caught the beginning of the the ebb out through Cattle Pass. Biggs orcas had just cleared to the East by Iceberg Pt so we kept a southerly sail and met humpback whale, BCX2075 “Olympus”, and her newborn calf meandering South of Salmon Bank. “Olympus” was born in 2018 to “Divot”, is the granddaughter of famous humpback “Big Mama”, and also the mother of “Achilles” born 2023. “Olympus” has been seen wintering in Hawaii. After enjoying quiet time sailing alongside the whales we returned against the ebb tide visiting the Stellar sea lions of Whale Rocks and bald eagles and black oystercatchers in the golden evening light along the shoreline of Lopez Island. Classic summer evening sail with whales.
