July 1, 2025 – After casting off we headed north with a good sail up San Juan Channel. We spotted our first harbor seal pups of the year with one mom/pup pair by Shirt Tail Reef and another on the eastern beach on Yellow Island. We had a fun sail across towards Spieden Channel where we had planned to meet up with some Biggs/Transient orcas. The T36A’s had come up Haro Strait and turned east in Spieden Channel. They had stopped to hunt in the area by Sentinel Island and once finished moved more quickly than we anticipated and flew by us as they approached Green Pt. Af first we thought maybe they were headed to Flattop island, but instead turned up closer near the Cactus Islands. Tricky viewing… Unfortunately, we lost them and couldn’t relocate them. Eventually they were found again by White Rock. We enjoyed our time drifting in New Channel and crossed towards Flattop Island. We had a good sail to Spring Pass before making our way through the Wasp Islands. Our young passengers helped sail the boat as we made our way back to Friday Harbor in the sunset.
