Sunset sail around Skipjack Island

July 23, 2025 – With a report of Biggs/Transient orcas known as the T65B’s hunting at Java Rocks we headed north quickly. As we approached Sandy Pt the orcas had continued their travel towards East Pt and beyond putting themselves out of range for us. We changed course for Skipjack Island where we spotted the black matte naked seal missing pelage – a familiar harbor seal whom we’ve documented for years here. Coming passed the kelp reef a harbor seal was engaged in tail slapping which could be associated with mating behaviour. Passing Bare Island we continued around the Waldron coastline and crossed to Lovers Cove on Orcas Island. Hugged the Orcas Island forested coastline, cut through the Wasp Islands and tacked our way across the channel back to Friday Harbor through sunset.
