Sept 24, 2025 – We had been monitoring sighting reports of a pair of humpback whales who had been coming down President Channel and were now southbound in San Juan Channel. We rallied our passengers and off we went. Shortly after exiting the harbor we got our first looks. They had been identified as BCX0915 “Fallen Knight” and BCY0195 “Fader”. Stunning views with a Mt Baker backdrop and rainbow blows as we sailed parallel leaving them just south of Pear Pt. We returned through the narrow pass around Turn Island on our way back to Friday Harbor.
According to HappyWhale.com:
“Fallen Knight” was first documented 2003. She is a mother of 3 (calves born 2019, 2021, 2024) and has been seen in Hawaii during breeding season.
“Fader” was first documented in 2000. Gender is unknown. He/She has also been documented in Hawaii. Per HappyWhale.com: “BCY0195 “Fader” was spotted off Lasqueti Island, north of Parksville, British Columbia by a Vancouver Island Whale Watch tour guide, entangled in fishing gear, on September 21, 2025. The distressed whale was reported and very fortunately disentangled two days later by a successful response from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Department of National Defence (DND)**.”
