Afternoon half day sail to Kellett Bluff to see J Pod

March 22, 2021 – We had great sailing conditions today. Heading north on the flood we passed in between Yellow Island and McConnell Islands and up along the west side of Jones Island. With a fast close hauled sail we made our way over to Green Pt to see the sea lions.. With news that the Southern Resident Orcas from J Pod were northbound in Haro Strait we decided to sail over to Henry Island to see if we could get a quick look. Hugging the north shore of San Juan Island we stayed in the back eddy in Spieden Channel. As we neared Henry Island we spotted distant blows. The J19’s were foraging off Kellett Bluff. It was a short, but exciting encounter introducing these endangered orcas to our passengers. Note: All photos of the Southern Resident orcas are heavily cropped.
