Wildlife cruise to Salmon Bank

September 13, 2022 – After cutting the lines we sailed south taking the narrow pass behind Turn Island. Harbor seals were laid out resting on the rocks. We had a great sail down San Juan Channel tacking our way down to Cattle Pass. Harbor seals were lining the beach on Goose Island and over by Deadman Island they were sprawled out over the rocks. On Whale Rocks the Brandt’s cormorants were plentiful and the Steller sea lions were hauled out. We sailed out to Salmon Bank covering the usual minke whale hot spots, but unfortunately we came up empty handed today. On our way back we sailed behind Long Island and heard the calls of several loons. We found them in a nook along the Lopez shoreline and headed up San Juan Channel back to Friday Harbor.
