Southern Residents at Boiling Reef

November 12, 2022 – When we cast off from Friday Harbor we decided to go north. We had some nice sailing up to the Wasp Islands. With news of all the Southern Residents in Boundary Pass we decided to pick up the pace with the hopes to get a glimpse of them. They had been traveling very slowly from Turn Pt to Pender Island, but when they reached Java Rocks they, too, picked up the pace and moved quickly towards East Pt. As we reached East Pt we could see a line of fins in the distance as they were rounding Boiling Reef. They were moving quickly north towards the Fraser River and we had to call it to make it back to Friday Harbor before dark. We headed towards Bare Island and across Presidents Channel to Orcas Island. We had a peaceful sail wing on wing down the coastline of Orcas in the warm sunshine with the wind behind us and back down San Juan Channel to Friday Harbor.
