August 2, 2023 – As we left Friday Harbor there was a family of Biggs/Transient orcas known as the T46’s traveling south along the east side of San Juan Island. We met the orcas as they approached Pt Caution and stayed with them until Turn Island. It was sad not seeing matriarch T46 present – apparently she has been missing since the spring and possibly deceased. Their backlit blows were stunning as they swam close to shore against the forested coastline. They oozed into the entrance to Friday Harbor briefly as they continued south. At Turn Island we broke away to sail around the island taking the narrow pass to check out the harbor seals. We used the flooding current to sail across the channel towards Shaw Island and drifted up along the coastline peacefully. In Parks Bay we brought out a surprise birthday cake for one of our passengers for her 80th birthday. It was a great day!
