Yellow Island Nature Preserve on Easter Day

March 31, 2024 – Easter Sunday. As we sailed out of Friday Harbor we met a couple of Steller sea lions together with a California sea lion. As we approached Point Caution our passenger spotted a nice pod of harbor porpoise in the channel. Sailing across San Juan Channel with sunshine and a cool breeze we came into the Wasp Islands. Today we dropped anchor and went ashore with our tender to the Nature Conservancy’s Yellow Island Nature Preserve. A great way to celebrate Easter on this beautiful Spring day. The island was covered in angelic fawn lilies. Indian paintbrush was just starting to bloom along with chocolate lilies. We also found many shooting stars and blue-eyed Mary. Quite idyllic to walk around the island and see the flowers in bloom. When we returned to the sailboat we sailed alongside Jones Island and then crossed to Spieden Island to see the Steller sea lions at their haul out site. We returned home along the San Juan Island coastline.
