An Evening Sail with a Minke Whale and a Stunning Sunset

August 8, 2024 – We had such a great southerly morning sail so we decided to go south again despite the current being against us. Sailed around Turn Island passing a pair of bald eagles and harbor seals then came inside Griffin Bay to find a back eddy. Cormorants, gulls and harbor seals were on Goose Island tending their young or resting. On Salmon Bank we got lucky finding the minke whale we saw earlier with the notch on the leading edge of her dorsal fin. She was foraging amongst the birds. Steller sea lions were taking it easy in the warm evening light and there were well over 20 black oystercatchers settling in for the night near the sea lions. At Deadman Island we spotted our favorite “black matte naked harbor seal” the one missing pelage. We’ve seen her here a few times over the last couple months. A great blue heron stood on a bull kelp bed near Kings Point. The sun set as we came up the channel and we watched the sky turn pink.
