August 24, 2026 – Afternoon short sail. Our favorite little sea otter was resting in the bull kelp at Turn Rock. Rhinoceros auklets were busy filling their mouths with fish. Harbor seals were hauled out getting some rest in the sunshine. We dropped anchor for a fun shore excursion at Turn Island State Park. As we were exploring the island a whale sighting report came in of orcas southbound from Mineral Point. We hopped back into the tender to return to Peniel, raised anchor and sailed across the channel to Hicks Bay and back across toward the San Juan Island shoreline. Here we met the orcas, Biggs/Transient orcas T36A1’s with T65A5, and had some nice views as they passed Friday Harbor. We left them at Reid Rock and sailed back to home.
