Half day sail in the Salish Sea

June 12, 2020 – Such a variety of sailing winds and lighting on the Salish Sea today. Light winds carried us quietly along the shoreline to Point Caution where we watched a fox exploring the shoreline. A beam reach took us quickly to the other side with enough of a push to drift inside the pass of Coon Island where we saw a Raccoon on McConnell Island. Downwind wing on wing carried us North through Spring Pass along the shoreline of Jones Island State Park. Warmed by the sun and with increasing winds we skipped along on a fast beam reach to Spieden Island. The lighting showed off the colors of the southern grassland slopes and we heard the calls of bald eagles as they watched us pass. Rounding the corner to New Channel we were met by a rainbow and drifting the strong current between the Cactus Islands was exquisite. The current carried us into stronger winds for a lively sail to Flattop Island where colors popped in the evening light. Pastel colors of the evening continued to paint through our return to Friday Harbor. The ever-changing beauty of sailing the Salish Sea.
