North to Spieden and Flattop Islands

May 14, 2022 – After leaving the harbor we spotted a couple bald eagles interacting with one another as we headed north. We cut through the Wasp Islands and found another bald eagle perched on the channel marker. Winds picked up giving us a good sail up to Green Pt to see the Steller sea lions. Noticeably few sea lions left (we counted 15) when weeks ago there were over 200. Our guess is that they’ve begun there migration north to the breeding grounds as they typically do before the end of May. It was fun experiencing the power of the current in New Channel as we cruised the north side of Spieden Island and cut back through the Cactus Islands. Riding the current we crossed to Flattop Island spotting more bald eagles and a large group of harbor seals on the southeast tip. Moderately strong winds coming down Presidents Channel gave us a great sail to Spring Passage. A cloudy, chilly start to our sail ended with a beautiful, sunny day.
