Orcas T18’s with T60D & T60E followed by Humpback BCX0936 “Mantis”

September 4, 2022 – After leaving Friday Harbor we went inter-island and out Peavine Pass to see some Biggs/Transient orcas. Brothers T60D and T60E were hanging out with the T18’s. Well, T19B was with the two brothers while the rest of the family was a little to the east closer to Cypress Island. We could see their fins surfacing in the distance and eventually they joined up together. It was pretty cool seeing the 4 big males together with their huge dorsal fins towering over the two females. The orcas headed towards Lawrence Pt and went north along the shoreline in the back eddy. We noticed that T60D and E vanished and weren’t with the T18’s any longer. It wasn’t easy keeping up against that strong ebb tide so we came about and headed back south toward Peapod Rocks to check out the harbor seals. We kept our eyes open looking for the two brothers but never spotted them again. A call came over the radio of a humpback whale moving north in Rosario headed our way. We got lucky to see the humpback whale, too, and identified the whale as male humpback BCX0936 “Mantis” using photos of the tail flukes and dorsal fin. After some nice looks at the humpback we came back through Peavine Pass and down to Upright Head and down Upright Channel backing tracks back to Friday Harbor.
