Biggs/Transient Orcas T46’s with T137 and T137B in Rosario Strait

September 30, 2023 – After casting off from Friday Harbor we had plans to head south on the ebb current, but when a report of Biggs/Transient orcas heading north from the bottom east side of Lopez Island we changed course. Heading inter-island the winds were gusty and strong at times. We reefed the sails and kept on going out through Thatcher Pass taking the narrow pass inside James Island. The orcas, T46’s and T137 with T137B, had been hunting a sea lion by Bird Rocks for about 2 hours before moving on northbound. We met the orcas just as they got underway and stayed with them until we were abeam of Obstruction Island. The backlit blows against the dark background of Blakely Island and turquoise water was breathtaking. After a great encounter we changed course for home.
