A Humpback and Biggs orcas T65B’s in Boundary Pass

April 19, 2025 – We had a good sail across San Juan Channel and through the Wasp Islands and were just dropping anchor at Yellow Island when we picked up a report of a humpback whale in Boundary Passage. We decided to go for it and headed North. The humpback whale was heading northeast as we sailed alongside with 5 minute dives and single or double surfacings. It was a young whale sounding without showing tail flukes; hence we weren’t able to identify it by dorsal fin alone. Approaching Monard Head the Biggs orcas known as the T65B’s appeared heading west. We changed course for Java Rocks. The orcas were moving fast and we had a hard time catching up. They disappeared into the cove at Camp Bay, South Pender Island, before reappearing heading for Tilly Pt. We left them and headed towards Turn Pt Lighthouse on Stuart Island and followed the coastline to Spieden Island. There were a couple bald eagles in the grass and a bunch of Steller sea lions at Green Pt. Southbound down San Juan Channel making it back in time for our guests to catch the ferry.
