Biggs/Transient Orcas T117A, T117B’s and T172 come in through Cattle Pass

June 1, 2026 – Exciting close-hauled sail over to Shaw Island and worked our way north on the coastline staying out of the ebb current. An adult bald eagle was in the nest on Cliff Island. As we came through the Wasp Islands we noticed a report of orcas west of Partridge Pt and headed straight north. We decided to turn around and this time rode with the ebb to the south. Cutting through Turn Island passage we noticed a large group of harlequin ducks, many harbor seals hauled out and the calls of a bald eagle. An elephant seal was on the tide line of Goose Island and we had a quick view of the Steller sea lions on Whale Rocks. From Long Island to Iceberg Pt we served BBQ lunch before heading out towards MacArthur Bank. We met Biggs/Transient orcas T117A, T117B, T117B1 and T172. This is the third time in the past two weeks meeting orcas we’ve never met before. We were able to sail with them towards Long Island. Here they caught the flood current and picked up speed towards 11 knots zooming in through Cattle Pass all the way to Pear Pt. They then changed course to Dinner Island and followed Griffin Bay around to go back out Cattle Pass against the maximum flood current running close to 5 knots. We returned via Turn Rock where the sea otter is once again hanging out.
