June 8, 2026 – Leaving Friday Harbor in light misty rain we changed course from North along San Juan coastline to South along Shaw coastline after hearing reports of orcas Southbound in Bellingham Channel and a humpback Southbound from Lawrence Pt. Eagles were looking a little wet today as we followed the Shaw coastline inside Canoe Island and cut across to Upright Head and then Peavine Pass. We met the humpback whale “Gretszky” BCX1800 and sailed alongside with spectacular blows that carried on the misty air and calmer water of Rosario Strait. The ebb current cuts offshore at the Eastern tip of the forested shoreline of Blakely Island so we left the humpback following the current with close hauled sailing on the current associated breeze. This took us to the T123 family of orcas who were entering Rosario Strait. Multi-directional perhaps ended in seeking out harbor porpoise. We left them Northbound and took Thatcher Pass to sail back by way of the West side coastline of Blakely Island. Made it back to Friday Harbor before the wind and rain increased for a successful sail with whales in a temperate rainforest coastline.
