Humpback whale BCX1800 ‘Gretzky’ followed by Orcas T49A’s

June 27, 2026 – Northbound to the Wasp Islands we had another glimpse of an eaglet in the nest on Cliff Island. We sailed back out around Low Island and saw our second and third harbor seal pups of the year (the first was on Skipjack the day before). We set a course for New Channel and hugged the forested coastline of Spieden Island seeing several bald eagles eating a Sika deer carcass. Large groups of Canada geese with some growing youngsters, a few belted kingfishers and some Mouflon sheep were seen as well. While dithering deciding a direction we received a report of a humpback whale moving fast on the flood current up Haro Strait. So, we headed south but after clearing Henry Island the humpback turned south against the current. We met the humpback BCX1800 “Gretzky”, but after viewing one sequence we lost them as they presumably turned in the strong current. We then received a report of orcas nearby northbound from County Park so we headed that way. Cutting through Mosquito Pass we met the T49A’s who also took Mosquito Pass near Posey Island. Sailing alongside they headed to Spieden Island. Returned via the south side of Spieden Island and the San Juan Island coastline.
