July 13, 2026 – After casting off we set sail to the south upon hearing reports of humpback whales. Cut inside of Turn Island seeing resting harbor seals. We ducked inside Griffin Bay to stay out of the flooding current. At Goose Island we’re seeing lots of newly hatched gull chicks while the cormorants stay on their nests. With a strong flood current rather than head south to the humpbacks we rode the current over to Whale Rocks to see the Steller sea lions. Then we continued on the current to the north side of Long Island and out to Iceberg Pt where we met the whales. Two whales suddenly became three whales near Swirl Rock where a single whale had been reported earlier in the day. The humpbacks were identified as BCX1702 ‘Uluka’, BCX2473 ‘Kiarra Kelly’ and BCY1014 ‘Poptart’. Stunning views as we sailed parallel with Mt Baker as a backdrop. After leaving the whales came inside James Island, through Thatcher Pass, hugged the Blakely Island steep forested coastline before returning via Upright Head.
