August 27, 2026 – We began our sail going down to Turn Rock to look for the sea otter, but today was one day we didn’t find him. With a report of orcas coming down the east side of Guemes Island and expecting them to come west in Guemes Channel we caught the flood current up Upright Channel. However, upon reaching Upright Head it became clear that the whales were headed for Swinomish Channel and out of range so we changed course to the west. Cayou Channel to Pole Pass to Spieden Channel cutting across with a fast sail from Henry Island to Sidney Island just in time to meet the T60 brothers (T60D and T60E). After a few views we left to check out the cormorant colony on Mandarte Island. The two male orcas followed us for another view. Fast sail back to New Channel north of Spieden Island. Lovely drift with light sprinkles and a double rainbow. Harbor seals, bald eagles and Sika deer. Returned down the coastline of San Juan Island back to Friday Harbor.
