A beautiful short evening sail

May 30, 2019 – A short evening sail. Strong winds from the south and an ebb tide. Skirting around Turn Island and the kelp forest we changed our mind about exiting Cattle Pass as wind against current can make hazardous conditions.

Looping around wing on wing we passed the harbor seal haul out backlit in the afternoon light. We came inside of Canoe Island for calmer waters and a bald eagle watched as we came through the narrow pass. We hugged the Shaw Island coastline of madrone and juniper full of color in the evening light. Listening to the bird song we drifted between Cliff and Nob Island. Close hauled fast sailing tacking down San Juan Channel to Friday Harbor as the sun set behind us.
