A pair of humpbacks BCX1057 ‘Divot’ and BCZ0338 ‘Geometry’, falcon chicks and an eaglet

May 30, 2019 – Fog to the south so we sailed north with some good winds. Wing on wing passing the harbor seals at Shirt Tail Reef and the harbor seals in the Emerald waters off Jones Island. We admired Flattop Island and noted the pigeon guillemots with their high pitch whistles who were busy nesting on the cliff face that we refer to as “fruit-cake geology”. Bald eagles on both Gull Rock and White Rock and onto Sandy Pt, Waldron Island.

It was then that we heard a report of two humpback whales at Java Rocks. We made quick time on the flood tide and met them at Boiling Reef. Seeing their flukes Barbara recognized them to be BCX1057 ‘Divot’ and BCZ0338 ‘Geometry’. While Geometry disappeared to the northeast, Divot appeared to be foraging north of Alden Point Lighthouse.

We left to visit Patos Island and onto Orcas Island. President’s Channel was full of color on the forested shoreline. The highlights were seeing a newborn eagle chick peering out of his nest, a pair of river otters curious about us, and a group of four fluffy Peregrine falcon chicks peering from their precarious cliff ledge.
