Biggs/Transient Orcas T46B1’s and T46C2 followed by Humpbacks BCZ0432 “Two Spot” & BCX1730 “Vanta”

Sept 27, 2025 – As we were leaving Friday Harbor we had a report of orcas northbound in Haro Strait (T35A’s) and orcas northeast bound towards Hein Bank (T46B1’s and T46C2). We decided to head south and said hi to the sea otter on Turn Rock. Winds were light to calm but we sailed for awhile on light air admiring large numbers of common murre and rhinoceros auklets. We passed Deadman Island seeing harbor seals and out to Whale Rocks seeing Stellar sea lions. Current was still ebbing so we picked up speed to head south meeting the orcas at Hein Bank. The orcas were engaged in hunting a harbor seal which took some time probably due to the presence of a new calf. Designated as T46B1D this calf was first seen on Sept 16th and is the newest addition to the Biggs orcas. Spy hops, breaches, tail lobbing, lunges were seen during the hunt. Upon completion the orcas began moving northwest and we headed back towards Cattle Pt Lighthouse. At Goose Island we met a pair of humpback whales, BCZ0432  “Two Spot” and BCX1730 “Vanta”, who will soon be on their way to Hawaii. Under sail listening to their blows we had a nice pass as they cleared the lighthouse. Winds picked up as we neared Pear Pt and we were at second reef by Turn Rock for a fast sail home in 15 knot winds. Birthday cake / anniversary celebrations as we entered Friday Harbor.
