April 22, 2026 – After casting off from Friday Harbor we headed North after hearing reports of two Biggs/Transient male orcas over by D’Arcy Island. They had crossed Haro from Henry Island earlier that morning. Spieden Island was full of activity today. Steller sea lions hauled out including branded sea lion “929R”, bald eagles on shore, Mouflon sheep/rams and fallow deer in large herds and loads of Bonaparte’s gulls in the channel. We had a beautiful drift in the fast moving ebb current. Harbor seals were abundant on Sentinel Rock. After sticking close to Stuart Island to stay out of the strong ebb coming down Haro we made our crossing into Canada towards the orcas. The orcas identified as T49A2 (born 2007) and T51 (born ~1981) had traveled north to the top of Sidney Channel but flipped direction heading back south. We arrived on scene near D’Arcy and had some great views as they continued south. After departing the orcas we had a fast sail about 7+ knots towards Cattle Pass where we rode in on the flood current. Sailed through the narrow pass around Turn Island before returning back to Friday Harbor.
