Sunset sail around Shaw Island following humpbacks

May 19, 2026 – Evening sunset sail. As we left Friday Harbor we saw a bald eagle carrying nesting material to Brown Island. Riding the back eddy to meet the flood at Turn Rock we saw a number of harbor porpoise in the current line and a sea otter in the kelp. Crossed towards Upright Channel knowing two humpback whales were northbound from Lopez Sound earlier in the afternoon. As we neared Canoe Island we heard the humpbacks were ahead of us heading west at Blind Bay. We moved quickly coming around Shaw Island and eventually saw them in the distance as we cleared the Wasp Islands. We followed seeing the distant blows in the sunset light. We turned at Limestone Pt to hug the San Juan coastline back to Friday Harbor.
