May 24, 2026 – A large number of Biggs/transient orcas had passed Friday Harbor thirty minutes before we left. We decided to head south on the ebb in the event they may stop and hunt. However, the orcas moved very quickly and kept on going towards Smith Island. We visited the Steller sea lions at Whale Rocks and saw our local sea otter grooming close to the rocks. We returned via Deadman Island seeing a bald eagle, black oystercatchers and harbor seals. As we returned towards San Juan Island we found a gray whale traveling slowly with long dive times (about 10 minutes).
