May 30, 2026 – Strong winds to the south so we headed north. A bald eagle was carrying a fish to its nest on Cliff Island. We’re hoping to catch a glimpse of a chick(s) emerging from the nest soon. As we came through the Wasp Islands we received the first whale report of the day – a pair of humpbacks northbound from Lawson Reef. So we changed course to come inter-island and headed for Thatcher Pass. Reports were sketchy but it appeared the whales we hoped to meet (a playful mom and calf) seemingly disappeared while a third went northbound towards Bellingham Channel. So we rode the flood tide north in Rosario Strait passing Eagle Cliff on Cypress Island and met the humpback (later identified as BCZ0575 “Chi”) at Sinclair Island. We sailed alongside getting some great views before turning for Lawrence Pt. We had a view of the old growth forest north of Lawrence Pt before running the coastline to Peavine Pass. We sailed home via Upright Channel.
