Orcas T123’s come inter-island

June 6, 2026 – Sails raised drifting on the current out of Friday Harbor for a short sunset sail. The back eddy met the flood at Turn Rock and we drifted North hearing the quiet quick puffs of harbor porpoise surfacing in the glassy upwellings. With news of the T123 matrilne of Biggs orcas who’d earlier been seen at Doe Bay coming inter island through Obstruction Pass we notched the sailing up a gear. BBQ dinner was served as we cleared Upright head. We met the orcas as they approached Shag Rock as they began to hunt a harbor seal. Perhaps more than one seal as they continued hunting coming close to the Orcas Island shoreline through sunset. Three of the family continued West leaving one still engaged after the predation event before this whale porpoised the length of Cayou Channel to catch up. Fast run back to Friday Harbor for the 10 o’clock ferry with lovely views of Mount Baker with the snow fields still catching the late sun and spectacular sunset light toward Canada leading into dusk.
