Gray whale CRC-2702 near Shoal Bight

June 7, 2026 – After casting off we were monitoring a report of orcas in Guemes Channel (T124A’s) who later turned south in Rosario Strait. We sailed to Turn Rock where a sea otter was taking a nap wrapped up in bull kelp and checked out some harbor seals resting on the rocks to the south. Wind conditions were quite strong coming from the southwest making a sea of white caps in Griffin Bay. We gave a good scan to the south before sailing up Upright Channel and across to Blakely Island. The orcas had been in Burrows Bay and chose a southerly direction making them out of range for us (they continued down to Admiralty Inlet). We continued southbound exiting Lopez Pass and got to see gray whale CRC-2702 who’s been hanging out by Shoal Bight for about a month now. We spun around and headed north to Thatcher Pass, hugged Blakely Island before crossing back to Upright Channel, sailing behind Canoe Island, and returned to Friday Harbor.
