June 15, 2026 – Raised sails and caught the ebb current for a Southerly course. There was a bald eagle on Turn Island and sea otter in the kelp of Turn Rock. We sailed close hauled into the wind tacking a couple times, then ran the shoreline of Lopez Island. Several more bald eagles looked over the low tide showing on the Lopez shoreline. Drifted passed Deadman Island seeing a belted kingfisher and hauled out harbor seals. The end of the ebb took us passed Whale Rocks Steller sea lion haulout and then over to Long Island where we saw black oystercatchers, bald eagle and great blue heron. The Southern Lopez coastline just keeps getting better. We saw eagles nests, one with an adult inside so we’ll be looking out for a chick(s) as the summer comes. Drifted on the now flooding current though the splendour of Castle and Blind Islands pointed South making little headway. As we rounded the corner pushed by the flood we set course for a humpback whale on a sideways course against the flood. After some beautiful views we left the humpback whale, BCX1795 ’Scuttle’, at Burrows Island and ran with the the flood to Thatcher Pass. Enjoyed BBQ sockeye salmon and veggies while viewing the steep forested Blakely coastline. Returnd via Upright Head and Canoe Island with a fast sail across the channel to Friday Harbor.
