Humpback Whales BCY1186 ‘Velvet’ & BCX2485 ‘Vector’

June 24, 2026 – Sailing north in San Juan Channel to the Wasp Islands and we got our first glimpse of a bald eagle chick in a nest on Cliff Island. On Low Island we saw black oystercatchers, harlequin ducks and harbor seals. With a report of two humpback whales northbound in Haro Strait we took the fastest route to Battleship Island. We were just in time to meet and sail alongside with humpback whales BCY1186 “Velvet” and BCX2485 “Vector”. Interestingly they turned east to the entrance to New Channel before circling to head back west toward Turn Pt. We noticed a number of bald eagles engaged in a pecking order for a animal carcass. Along with eagle calls we noticed peregrine falcon calls from two birds on the bluff of Spieden Island. Looking closely we found a peregrine perched on a Douglas fir tree. A bald eagle was swimming to the shoreline. Cutting through the Cactus Islands we headed to Flattop Island where we found another eaglet much larger than the one on Cliff Island. Returned via Spring Pass and back through the Wasp Islands with a close hauled sail back to Friday Harbor.
