July 26, 2026 – Our earlier sail was cancelled for drizzly weather but rain drops seemed to be holding off enough for our evening sail. After casting off with a faint rainbow visible we headed north and encountered a humpback whale who had been southbound in San Juan Channel. It was identified as “Bandit” BCX2081, the 2020 calf of a humpback whale referred to as “Raccoon”. According to HappyWhale.com the gender is unknown but sightings database shows this whale winters in Baja, Mexico. Stunning views as it traveled down the channel along the forested coastline and passing Friday Harbor. The whale continued on the ebb current towards Cattle Pass, and we spun around to take the pass near Turn Island. Other wildlife seen include a bald eagle on Reid Rock channel marker, a sea otter by Turn Rock, harbor seals, rhinoceros auklets fishing for supper, and a belted kingfisher.
