August 8, 2026 – Sailed North out of Friday Harbor making good time downwind on the flood. However after cruising through the Wasp Islands we decided South was our best bet for seeing whales. So after a a close hauled sail across the channel we followed the San Juan shoreline South. Passing Turn Island we saw the sea otter who’s made this his home. Harbor seals were hauled out in the sun all in a row on Goose Island where the cormorants nest. Gull chicks are slightly larger balls of fluff with legs. A report of two humpback whales inbound from Middle Bank and we pushed on up island after rounding Cattle Point lighthouse. The humpbacks turned South from Pile Point in our favour so we were able to sail alongside back towards Salmon Bank. The Id’s are BCX0870 “Scoop” and her 2026 calf. First identified on HappyWhale.com in 1999. She visits Hawaii for breeding season and she is a mother of 6 offspring (2016, 2018, 2021, 2023, 2025 and 2026). We left them to visit the Steller sea lions on Whale Rocks and return through Cattle Pass vis Deadman Island.
