August 11, 2026 – We sailed north to meet Biggs/Transient orcas known as the T19’s. We saw the bald eagle’s nest on Cliff Island with a chick inside the nest. Rounding the eastern point of Cliff Island we met the orcas who traveled north and hunted near Bird Rock. We sailed alongside when they continued north through Spring Pass with good views as they searched the rocks and coastline. They circled Jones Island with a successful predation (presumably harbor seal) at the bottom of Jones Island before continuing on towards the Wasp Islands. We lett the whales to check out the wildlife at Flattop Island National Wildlife Refuge. Many harbor seals with young pups were hauled out on the honeycomb sandstone shoreline. Other wildlife seen here included a juvenile bald eagle, pigeon guillemots and a river otter. Sailing back down to Friday Harbor we met the T19’s again who were headed toward the San Juan Island shoreline. We had a good sail tacking back and forth down the channel to return to the harbor.
