September 1, 2026 – Northbound through the Wasp Islands to Jones Island and out Spieden Channel. With a report of Biggs/Transient orcas known as the T109A’s northbound in Haro Strait on the Canadian side we decided to go for it. Conditions in Haro were chunky with 3 footers and moderately strong winds. We sailed on the ebb across to D’Arcy Island at first reef which was a little too much and we were overpowered. We came to second reef north of D’Arcy to have more control as we met the orcas. The orcas headed north into Sidney Channel keeping very close to Sidney Island coastline. We sailed parallel getting some stunning views. As we rounded the northern spit we left them to head to Mandarte Island cormorant rookery. Lots of cormorant chicks visible. We also saw harbor seals, black oystercatchers, various diving birds and many gulls. With the benefit of the current which was now flooding we sailed back to Spieden Island and drifted through New Channel. Lovely views of more wildlife. We returned to Friday Harbor via the San Juan Island coastline.
