September 3, 2026 – After leaving Friday Harbor we met a Steller sea lion with a spiny dogfish. We had a good sail tacking through the Wasp Islands seeing harbor seals on the sand spits of Yellow Island. As we came around Jones Island it looked like we’d be headed to Biggs/Transient near Sidney, BC. We then heard a report of orcas near Pender Island eastbound so we changed course for Flattop Island and White Rock National Wildlife Refuge. Nice views of harbor seals as we continued north to Java Rocks. Here we found a jackpot of black oystercatchers with 50+ resting. We then heard that orcas (probably the same ones as earlier) were on the east side of Waldron Island. So after a quick view to Monarch Head we headed south again meeting the T49A’s north of White Rock. They were moving quickly with many direction changes. We sailed parallel back down to Flattop Island and over to Spieden Island. With a final view along the Spieden coastline we headed back to Friday Harbor.
