September 11, 2026 – Sailed South today in light winds passing Turn Rock and finding the sea otter rolling and grooming away from the kelp some 300 yards to the East. Winds increased at Big Rock where we set the main to first reef for a fast tack across the channel. Exited Cattle Pass against the flood and then slid on the current across to Whale Rocks to view the Steller sea lions. Came around Long Island finding around 20 black oystercatchers on the Northeast point. Out to salmon bank to see a minke whale surfacing regularly on the Southern drop off. The minke moved North to come through a bait ball marked by gulls and common murres. Appeared to forage here through several surfaceings before moving back to the South. Sailed back to Friday Harbor on the tail of flood current passing harbor seal hauled out on Deadman Island. Other wildlife included a number of great blue herons and belted kingfishers.
