Biggs/Transient Orcas T19’s pass Friday Harbor

October 10, 2026 – Spectacular autumn sail. Biggs/transient orcas of the T19’s (mother T19 born <1965 with son T19B born 1995 and son T19C born 2001) were southbound in San Juan Channel. As they passed Friday Harbor T19C came inside the south entrance of the harbor milling before catching up to mom and older brother who appeared to be taking the narrow channel around Turn Island. We also took Turn Island Pass and came around to see the sea otter who was busy eating sea scallops. We continued around Pear Pt spotting a great blue heron, harlequin ducks, Bonaparte’s gulls, and harbor seals. The orcas continued south inside Griffin Bay and we caught up to them near Harbor Rock where they were milling near a Steller sea lion. Eventually the orcas continued towards Goose Island and we watched the sea lion spy hopping watching them swim away. Lucky fella! At Goose Island and Whale Rocks there were many cormorants. Steller sea lions were hauled out at Whale Rocks and it didn’t appear to be as many as usual. We returned by way of Deadman Island where a pair of bald eagles perched together on a dead tree overlooking harbor seals on the rocks. A belted kingfisher called as it flew nearby. We spotted a couple more great blue herons and a beautiful common loon inside Friday Harbor before returning to the dock.
