October 18, 2026 – Sailed north with a few tacks against the wind taking us through the Wasp Islands and up to Jones Island. Pacific Madrone trees heavy with red berries. Garry Oak trees are going through their fall colors. As we approached White Rock we had a distant view of a humpback whale near Sandy Pt, Waldron Island. The whale surfaced three times traveling east and as we continued to Sandy Pt we didn’t spot it again. We then heard on the VHF that the whale was spotted south of us near Pt Disney. It appeared to be doing big circles in the area. We met the humpback whale, CRC-23332, near White Rock traveling west somewhat erratic and then northwest along Johns Island. Awesome views. We left the whale to head through Ripple Pass and the Cactus Islands into New Channel. Harbor seals, cormorants, bald eagles, Mouflon rams/sheep, Bonaparte’s gulls and a great blue heron were seen here. We didn’t find any Steller sea lions at Green Pt as we thought they should be back here by now. We moved quickly down the coast of San Juan Island back to Friday Harbor.
