June 13, 2026 – Sailed South with reports of a humpback whale and calf heading South after passing Friday Harbor. We sailed through Turn Island pass seeing harbor seals hauled out warming in the sun. We met the whales ‘Divot’ BCX1057 and calf while reefing sails to reduce speed. ‘Divot’ is the 2003 daughter of ‘Big Mama’. ‘Big Mama’ having 8 calves and was the first whale to return to the Salish Sea after almost 100 years absence of humpbacks after the hunting at the turn of the century. ‘Divot’ is the mother of 6 offspirng and a grandmother of 3. The calf was playful waving pectoral fins and dragging tail flukes across the surface. After many good views sailing alongside we continued South seeing a bald eagle on Cattle Point Lighthouse and the cormorant nests on Goose Island. We came out to Salmon Bank and found a minke whale, possibly ‘Dent’. Single surfacings and mulitdirectional but with patience we caught a few good views. Returning to Cattle Pass we had another view of the humpbacks and a distant view of a third umpback ‘Artemis’. Made our way over to Whale Rocks to see the Steller sea lions. Also saw harbor porpoise, rhinocerous auklets and bald eagles along the Lopez shoreline.
