September 7, 2026 – Today we sailed north after departing Friday Harbor. With news of Biggs/Transient orcas, the T49A’s, near Skipjack Island we made fast progress cutting through the Wasp Islands, up Spring Pass and to President Channel. Hugged the north coastline of Orcas Island breaking off just shy of Lovers Cove to cross to Waldron Island meeting the orcas near Mail Bay. They were moving quickly with some socializing possibly eating a meal from earlier. The group practically touched the Waldron shoreline as they hugged it closely towards Pt Disney. Gorgeous views against the honey-combed sandstone, the fall colours and of Pt Disney cliff face. We had a nice parallel sail towards White Rock and Flattop Island where we paused to reef the main sail. We found one Steller sea lion in the water at Green Pt in the bull kelp seemingly not bothered by the orcas approaching. Earlier other orcas known as the T19’s were found northbound along the west side of San Juan Island. They turned east in Spieden Channel and turned south down San Juan Channel. We wondered if both groups would join up to say hello, but they did not. We broke off to see the T19’s. The T49A’s continued west in Spieden Channel but made a u-turn wrapping around to come back east along the San Juan Island side and eventually turned south down San Juan Channel following the same course as the T19’s. Stunning views of mom, T19, and her two humungous sons, T19B and T19C, with backlit exhales against the forested coastline of San Juan Island. Truly breathtaking. We stuck with them until the entrance to Friday Harbor where we finished our sail.
