September 8, 2026 – Brisk northerly wind and a strong flood current gave us a lovely fast sail to tack through the Wasp Islands all the way up to Flattop Island. Here we found harbor seals, a raven, and a family of river otters playing on shore. With news of a humpback whale northbound in Haro Strait we changed course to New Channel. We found a Steller sea lion and a few bald eagles. Pushing out into Haro Strait we met the humpback whale, BCY0771 “Bump”, an approximately 24+ year old male who winters in Baja, Mexico. We watched him surface in glassy calm waters and as a deep sea vessel passed he began to breach. Multiple half breaches, chin slaps and full breaches while traveling at speed in the flood current. Spectacular sight all the way to Turn Pt Lighthouse. We left the humpback whale to visit Lovers Leap and circle Stuart Island. We cut in through Ripple Island and the Cactus Islands before making a fast fun back to Friday Harbor.
