Humpback Whale BCY1552 near Salmon Bank

October 14, 2026 – We headed south in San Juan Channel today following a humpback whale who had been southbound in San Juan Channel a couple hours earlier. We spotted a pair of bald eagles in Turn Island Pass and found a Steller sea lion swimming in the channel. We stopped to Whale Rocks to see the Steller sea lions and headed south scanning for another humpback whale who had been seen swimming south from Eagle Pt. After not spotting the whale we had thoughts to sail around Lopez Island. As we arrived at Iceberg Pt we had a report of a humpback whale west of Salmon Bank. We returned and found the humpback whale identified as BCY1552. The whale was multi-directional with long dives but we had some views and saw its tail flukes numerous times. We returned by way of Deadman Island seeing harbor seals and large bait balls in San Juan Channel. As the sunset set we returned back to Friday Harbor seeing the new moon. Other notable wildlife included a yellow billed loon, large groups of surf scoters and several bald eagles.
